What should we wear?

With some families, it’s like pulling teeth to get the whole group together, so if coordinating the clothing is too much of a project, don’t worry about it. Getting the family together is the important thing!

When we have a display, there are certain photos that cause people to stop and say, “Oooooh!” You can bet it’s a photo in which the family coordinated the color of the clothing. However, if you have the opportunity to plan the clothing, it can make a big difference in the beauty of your portrait. For your portrait to have an "o-o-o-o" factor, think about coordinating the colors of your family's clothing.

How do you coordinate the clothing?

This doesn't have to be a big project--maybe everyone can bring several sweaters and then mix and match when they get there. You might suggest everyone include some medium blue in their outfit. Or you can ask everyone to use darker colors (grey, blue, brown) or ask everyone to wear pastels. If someone doesn’t have clothing to coordinate with the rest of the family, you can always check out a thrift shop. Some people buy fabric and use it as a shawl. There is a huge variety of color and patterns.

 What colors do you suggest?

Any color can make a great photo. It’s coordinating those colors between family members that can make a big difference in the beauty of your portrait. Orange, blue, purple are all fine—but you may not like your portrait as well if you are the only one in orange and be standing between someone wearing white on one side and purple on the other side. You don’t have to “match.” You just don’t want to clash.

 What about bright colors?

Red and other bright colors can be beautiful in a portrait. Depending on the background, white is a bright color, too, especially out of doors. Work some of the bright color into the clothing of everyone—a tie with red in the pattern on one person, a sweater with some red in the pattern on someone else, a red hair bow for the little one, etc.

Should we wear casual clothing outdoors?

You can and some families love their portraits in jeans. But don’t feel stuck with casual clothing--even wedding dresses and tuxedos look great in or out of doors.
